Would you feel safe saying you were struggling, if you knew it might be used against you?
This is something we hear again and again 😢
👉 As a union, we see first hand the impact allegations have on foster carers. Even when unfounded, the emotional toll can be significant, stress, anxiety, loss of confidence, and the constant fear that anything you say or do could be misinterpreted.
👉 And because of that, many carers stop speaking up altogether, but that silence comes at a cost.
👉 It affects carers wellbeing, it affects their confidence, and over time, it affects retention and placement stability.
This isn’t about carers “not coping”, it’s about a system where the fear of allegations can make honesty feel unsafe.
We need to change that, because carers who feel safe and supported are carers who can keep going.
And that stability is exactly what children need.

Continuing the conversation about foster carers’ mental health, these numbers speak for themselves.
It’s no wonder 78% of carers say their mental health has suffered due to fostering. This isn’t about individual resilience, it’s about the system making it so hard to cope.
• 48% say their provider doesn’t, or only sometimes, comply with the law and national minimum standards
• 50% reported a concern or complaint about professionals in the last year
• 80% are not always given the information they need when a child is placed
• 54% say care plans are not always up-to-date, followed, or effective
• 60% say children in their care have unmet mental health needs
• 62% do not always have a good working relationship with the child’s social worker
• 48% do not have paid respite or breaks in their fostering agreement
Have you experienced any of these?
These are not minor frustrations, they are real, systemic pressures that affect both carers and the children they care for.

We know holidays can be tricky, not just for children, but for foster carers too.
Routines are disrupted, children with ASD, ADHD, or other SEND face extra challenges, and many are navigating lifelong grief, loss, and attachment issues. And yes… chocolate overload doesn’t make it any easier!
Many assume carers are on “holiday” too, but 77% report that out-of-hours support is insufficient, especially during school breaks. That means you’re often managing alone, and that’s when things can go wrong.
A few reminders:
• Document everything carefully
• Report and record incidents early
• Reach out if you sense an issue, early action prevents escalation
We always see a spike in problems after holidays, when social workers return. Acting early protects both you and the children in your care.
And remember, like car insurance, you need to be a member before anything happens. Don’t wait join today: https://nupfc.com/join/

Why NUPFC is different when it comes to legal defence, always read the small print when it comes to what support you ACTUALLY get in allegations from the ‘traditional’ support services.
They might give you a generic helpline, or “legal insurance” that only kicks in if you’re arrested.
That’s not enough. That’s not what foster carers need.
At NUPFC:
• We have a dedicated legal trade union team.
• We defend you from start to finish in every allegation.
• We do casework, challenge reports, and provide full representation—not just a call to a solicitor after things have escalated.
• We use the best and most qualified lawyers, fully immersed in fostering law.
Our Head of Legal, Jacqueline McGuigan, is a Senior Courts solicitor, award-winning litigator, and co-founder of TMP Solicitors LLP. She is renowned for her razor-sharp strategy, relentless advocacy, and mastery of fostering legislation.
Allegations can happen at any time. Don’t leave it to chance. You deserve specialist help, not a generic helpline or a cup of tea and sympathy.

What every foster carer should know about the 2026 safeguarding updates
It may sound legal heavy, but it matters. Everyone, from social workers to local authorities, has to legally follow these rules, and knowing them empowers you as a carer.
Here’s what’s new and important for you, and what your services should be following:
👉 Practitioners should work with empathy, compassion, and respect.
👉 They should avoid blame and shame, and recognise carer’s strengths.
👉 Responses should adapt to trauma, disability, culture, or barriers families face.
👉 You should know who will attend meetings, and what will be discussed.
👉 You can bring a supporter and receive preparation, info, and a safe environment to engage.
👉 You should understand issues, possible decisions, and outcomes clearly.
👉 Practitioners should actively seek feedback from carers.
👉 Your expertise should influence processes and improvements.
Knowing these rules isn’t just “nice to have”, it’s your right, and it strengthens your voice in meetings, decision-making, and safeguarding.
