A reminder for all foster carers, past and present.
Last week, we were contacted by a couple facing a historic allegation, years after their fostering journey had ended.
Our General Secretary, Robin Findlay, said:
“People should have cover for historical allegations. One member faced an allegation 13 years after resigning. Once a foster carer, always a foster carer. You should remain a member of the union to protect yourself from losing everything.”
Many carers assume that once they resign, their exposure to allegations ends. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.
Historic allegations can arise years later and can have significant emotional, financial and reputational consequences.
If you have resigned, are thinking about resigning, or have recently left fostering, maintaining your union membership can provide valuable peace of mind and ongoing protection should issues arise in the future.

Last week, the Children’s Minister released another round of videos celebrating millions of pounds invested in reconnecting care-experienced young people with important people from their past through the Life Long Links programme.
No one would argue against helping young people rebuild lost relationships.
But many foster carers are asking a simple question: What is being invested in preventing those relationships from being lost in the first place?
Every day, foster carers see the consequences of decisions made around children rather than with them. Too often, carers are excluded from decision-making, their concerns dismissed, and children’s attachments disrupted despite the best efforts of the adults who love and care for them.
We are repeatedly told that children in care lack love, belonging and stability. Yet thousands of foster carers work tirelessly every day to provide exactly those things.
The reality is that many relationship breakdowns are not inevitable. They are the result of decisions, systems and practices that too often fail to prioritise the people who matter most to children.
Supporting care leavers to reconnect is important.
Preventing those connections from being broken in the first place should be too.

⚠ ⚠ ⚠ Foster carers need to pay attention ⚠ ⚠ ⚠
We’re being told (in the newly resurfaced ‘Allegations Took Kit’ that caused so much distress the entire foster carers community) that “false” and “malicious” should be removed as outcomes in allegations against foster carers.
The justification? References to the Star Hobson review.
So we went looking for the recommendation, and guess what….we couldn’t find it.
The Star Hobson review was about safeguarding failures around a child. It was not about allegations against foster carers. It did not examine false allegations against foster carers. It did not recommend removing “false” or “malicious” outcomes.
If an allegation is proven to be false, what do we call it?
If an allegation is made maliciously, why shouldn’t that be recorded?
A fair system protects children. A fair system also protects innocent carers.
No foster carer should be expected to live under a system where allegations can be made against them, but there is no meaningful way to acknowledge when those allegations are untrue.
Show us the evidence. Show us the recommendation.

“I sincerely think you must be the best thing for foster carers there could possibly be. I only wish I’d known about you when I was fostering.”
Messages like this remind us why the Foster Care Union exists.
Too many foster carers discover us only after they’ve left fostering. Too many carry lasting trauma from how they, and the children in their care, were treated when things went wrong.
Fostering can be isolating. When the system turns against you, nobody should have to face it alone.
That’s why we’re here. To stand beside foster carers when it matters most.

Yes, we’re saying it again, because every single week it happens 😢
Foster carers contact us after an allegation and tell us the “independent support” they were offered wasn’t what they expected. Many say they only discovered the union afterwards.
The largest independent survey of foster carers found only 18% are told we exist by their LA or agency. From October, not informing carers will become unlawful.
We keep hearing the same story:
1. “I didn’t think it was worth paying for support as I got it free from my provider”
2. “I thought the free support from my service would be enough.”
3. “What I actually got was nothing like what had been presented in support groups, marketing or PR.”
The hard truth
You generally need to already be a member to receive full representation, like car insurance, it has to be in place before the crash.
We can still support non-members, but the cost typically starts from £2,000+.
Take it from carers who found out the hard way this week: don’t wait until an allegation arrives.

IMPORTANT WARNING FOR ALL FOSTER CARERS
Did you know that non‑conviction information — including allegations, opinions, and even mental health detentions — can now be added to your Enhanced DBS?
One of our members recently contacted us after finding deeply worrying information online about what can be disclosed:
Arrests or allegations that never led to charges
Ongoing investigations
Fixed Penalty Notices if deemed “relevant”
Section 136 mental health detentions
Cautions, warnings, reprimands that aren’t filtered
AND the DBS can bar you from working with children or adults even without a convictionAt the National Union of Professional Foster Carers (NUPFC), we are seeing this happen more and more — and yes, you should be concerned.
In today’s increasingly authoritarian climate, police forces can add information to your DBS based on third‑party opinions, not proven facts.
This is why every incident in your life must be documented and evidenced — and why membership BEFORE anything goes wrong is absolutely vital.
If incorrect information appears on your DBS:
Apply immediately to the Chief of Police in the area where it was added
If they refuse to correct it, you may need to appeal to the Upper Tribunal
This process is expensive and rarely covered by insurance
NUPFC members have access to specialist DBS lawyers who can help you challenge incorrect or unfair disclosures — but only if you are already a member when the issue arises.
